Brown Engine Dust

Noticed some fine brown dust on the aft side of the engine. Its a light tan in color, and some peces are like dust bunnies (if you know what I mean) not just fine powder.

I know its not fan belt dust. At first I thought it was due to the excessive dust in our harbor which is undergoing massive reconstruction due to Sandy, but I'm on a mooring away from the construction and still getting it.

Anyone have this or any ideas on what could be causing it? Everything seems to be running fine.

Yep have had the dust. Where mine came from was the damper plate. I just could bot stand the dust no more so I pulled the trany and bell housing to see where it came from. Now I know and I could of went many more hours on the damper plate but it was just one of those things I gotta fix.

Check the insulation around your exhaust riser.

Randy.... if we're talking the same damper plate, I replaced mine 2 years ago and its a plain white color, not brown. Could this be the same thing?

I will check the insulation.... thanks

Mike... you were spot on. Insulation had broken away right at the end clamp with the metal foil covering ripped and the insulation exposed. Got some new insulation at NAPA and was able to patch around the weak spot.

Thanks!

I had replaced the insulation 4 years ago wirh the wrap and that was not my issue this time. It was the damper plate where the springs were starting to wear into the plate.
