I'm looking for a replacement alternator for my 1998 Catalina MKII with the M35 diesel. I know here have been many threads regarding this, but many are older, and wanted to check to see if there is any newer options out there. I just checked with Catalina Direct, and they had no reccomendations.

I have an alternator that was original on my 1993 M35A.
I'll send you some pictures.

Balmar makes high quality alternators, also Rod (aka Maine Sail) at marinehowto.com has some very high quality alternators — he occasionally posts here and has an excellent web site full of helpful info.

Thanks Les.. I have a number of options for Universal engines in Delco based and Leece-Neville based externally regulated alternators.
The link to the alternators section is here: https://shop.marinehowto.com/t/alternators--regulators

Only thing I would add is don't buy a cheap Chinese knock - off. I'm buying a Balmar next time.

John;
You might want top look into having your exsisting alternator rebuilt locally. Inexpensive and easy if your alternator produces enough for your needs.

I acquired a m25xpb which is the same engine as the M35. I converted it to a high output (140amp) serpentine belt system. I have the original alternator that has never been used. Happy to part with it for a small price.

I got a Prestolite Leece-Neville 8MR2069TA from ase-supply.com in Oregon: http://www.ase-supply.com/Leece_Neville_110_602_12V_90_amp_ALTERNATOR_p/ln-110-602.htm(link is external)
The alternator is 90 amps, which is a nice upgrade from the stock 55 amp.
I ordered the following pulley:

Worked well for me and cost less than $300 including shipping.

I have a similar 8MR 90A from them but three holes for mounting. When changing the mount my old alternator wouldn’t work with either the old or new tensioning arm. I have a 95A I removed for cheap + shipping. PM me if interested.

Thanks for all the input. I wanted to go with a higher output alternator, and I got a good deal on an Electromaax 100 amp + the serpentine pulley kit. Unfortunately, the tach is not working now. Getting power from the alt tach wire, and to the tach. Toggle switch is set to B, but have tried numerous other combinations, and it still does not move.

I understand that a higher output alternator takes more motor power. Does that cause the motor temperature to go higher which is a concrn for us in sunny Florida on the Gulf of Mexico because of the higher sea water teperature.

Fixed the tachometer problem. I'll check the temperature difference once I clean the heat exchanger. I was due..
