110%, 115%, 120%...opinions needed!

I'm looking to replace my RF head sail. Presently, I have the original 135. A couple of folks I have spoken to went with a 110 or a 115 when they replaced theirs. They stated that they only lost a little under half a knot in performance but gained easier sail handling.

We only ever cruise and never race the boat, and I like the idea of a 110. But, before I commit, I'd like to hear some other opinions.

What say you all?

Cheers

Bob

Hi Bob,

A lot depends on the prevailing winds average speed in your area. We sail with 145 and performe quite well until 16/18 AWS were we reef or set a 100 Yankee on an inner stay that allows Eureka to sail comfortable until 25/27 AWS.

my modest opinion is that a 110, will not really perform until the 13/15 knots TWS are reached. Another fact is that, cause of the geometric of the C36 with long spreaders, a 110 if the sheets are run outside them will not point very high. If your final decision is a 110, you might consider to put a small Genoa traveller in the cabin roof, so you can run the Genoa sheets inside the spreaders.

Hope this help,

Best regards

Just ordered new sails from Chic on our forum.  He suggested a 140 with a foam luff at 100.  I think that’s as close to the best of both worlds that you’ll get.

I would recommend a 135% as the best compromise.  I had my sailmaker mark the foot of the genoa with marks for 100% and 120% reefing.  It makes it easy to shorten sail without major loss of shape.  If it is too windy I just roll it up.  A 150% or 155% is generally too full to reef well, the flatter 135% works adequately for a cruised.

I have a 150% on Caprice and it usually works well on Charlotte Harbor here in sunny Punta Gorda Florida.where we enjoy the gentel breeze off the Gulf of Mexico.  When the wind is over a steady 15 or higher I sail with the jib only and it works great exept as stated above it does not go close well into the wind with this configuration. I have sailed with jib only reffed to about 120% on a beam reach out in the Gulf in wind up to 38 knts with 12 foot seas. Not to comfortable, but we moved along  nicely. We had a crew of four with three of us sea sick. Only the helms person was not sick of course. (She still laughs about.)
