Water Pump Issue M135B

Today had to fire up Westerbekke M135B while caught in unexpectedly strong winds. Engine redlined, hit 240 degrees and burned the belt.  I was able to replace the belt, made sure raw water strainer wasn't plugged and re started motor, the motor was pissing just fine.  Then I heard the screech and smoke - one of the pulleys was frozen and starting to burn the pulley belt.  I realized that the top left pulley had seized - see picture and finger pointing to the culprit. I believe that is the circulating pump for the antifreeze.  I am going to have my marina mechanic look at it.  Any advice or experience with this would be appreciated.

Hi Peter,

I'll defer to others with more experience but I'll hazard a guess. Perhaps the impeller has deteriorated and seized up. Has it been serviced or visually inspected recently? Let us know what your mechanic finds....

That is the fresh water pump for the engine block. Not hard to change. Expensive if bought from Westerbeke. Kumar Bros. (Ebay) has the pumps reasonably priced

The M35B engine is a Kubota block that was used in the Kubota B2710 tractor. Search under B2710 to find the parts but check the images or order and then compare the replacement to the original carefully - there were many variations.

The coolant pump is available on Amazon for $60.00(link is external)(link is external).

My pump seized up.  Engine is M35bc.  Impeller size for mine is 2.25".  Forum sites mentioned that the Kubota  equivalent number was 16251–7034.  The local Kubota dealer said their reference number said updated 216251 Dash 7037 which turned out to be a 2.75 inch diameter pump.   Westerbeke (508 997-1805) says the part number is 023180 add a cost of $676.20.

This one on Amazon may be the match for what you have(link is external), there was an old discussion of this issue on the C34.org site (https://c34.org/bbs/index.php?topic=9461.0(link is external)).
The genuine Kubota part is available for under $200. https://kubotageneratorsdirect.com/product/16251-73032/(link is external)
The Westerbeke/Universal parts are priced so high that playing a bit of roulette with aftermarket parts makes sense, especially when you can order and return if it is not the correct size - part of the many variations of the Kubota tractor engines used in all sorts of applications.
I'm new to the Catalina 36 and M35 engine but I used a Kumar Bros coolant pump replacement from Amazon on my older boat several years ago.
