Replacing Original Cowl Vents

As orignial owner, my C-36 is now 19 years old and aging beautifully! I would like to replace the two cabin mounted cowl vents. Can anyone confirm that original equipment in 1992 on a C-36 was supplied by Vetus?

Defender catalog has three different manufacturers of 4" cowl vents: Vetus "Tom S"; Nicro "Deluxe Standard"; and Seadog "Standard w/ Snap in Plate".

Can anyone suggest which is the proper one to use as a replacement.
The hole in the vent's base is 4" in diameter. I'd like to match it with a proper sized cowl vent, and not have to modify the dorade's base to which the cowl is attached.

Hoping someone can help.

I believe my 1989 uses Vetus Tom2.

I bought the PVC cowls offered by WM which had to be special ordered because our store did not have them in stock. I did not use the new inside mechanism, just the new ouside PVC housing. New holes have to be drilled because the old ones do not line up. Don't forget to fill in the old holes if you go this route. They look good, but the stainless steel cowls would look even better, however they are a lot more expensive.

Vetus are the OEMs.

I replaced mine with Plastimos from WM a few years ago. Like Caprice did.

If your Vetus inside "guts" still work, then try the Vetus replacement cowls. Most of the "issues" with the Vetus whole assembly is that the knob down below stops working and people think the whole thing is no good. That's incorrect. Take the BASE of the dorade OFF to expose the metal fittings and you will then be able to unscrew the metal plate that goes up and down, and lubricate it so it works properly again from down below.

If any of you have the August 2005 Mainsheet magazine, my writeup of the replacement is in the C34 Tech section. It includes pictures of both types.

I got my new cowl vents from Catalina Direct. They are exactly the same as those that came on the boat. Here's a link to the correct page....
