I hit what was probably a sunken log in the Trent-Severn canal. I had my stick on deck-sticking out the stern about 11ft-so I was defintely squatting beyond the two inches J Douglas says the rudder is shorter the keel on a wing.I could still steer but it was hitting the hull at the top. The consenus was to not bend the rudder back-rather to grind off a little off the top of the rudder and call it good until seasons end. I plan to try to get a new rudder from Catalina over the winter. Has anyone has simular experience or gotten a new rudder? Chris Hansen #1889 wk
The rudder stock on our 1999 boat was bent durng hurricane Charley in 2004The rudder was turned about 15 degrees to port and bent back so that the top prtion interfered with the hull when you tried to straighten it out.
The repair yard got a replacement rudder from Catalina and all has been well since.
One curious note was that the fiberglass at the bottom of the rudder was barely scarred at all, yet the heavy-walled tube making up the stock was bent. I know it is a long lever arm, but I would have thought the rudder would be more damaged if that much force was involved.

Do either of you guys have your old rudders? I jsut bought a boat where it is destroyed. I can rebuild one with a bent shart, if thats all it was. This is for a 1986 Catalina 36.
Any help is appreciated!

Sorry, the yard kept that when they installed the new one. Considering the scope of the boat damage in our affected area, I am sure it went in the trash.
