There is a circular spring ring at the bottom of the axel. It is not easy to remove, but after you remove it you should be able to slide the gearbox down and off. First remove the motor from the gearbox.
I used a steering wheel remover to pull the gearbox off the shaft, but I was not successful. It was frozen on the shaft. I needed to disassemble so that I could replace the seal above it.
Let us know if you were successful.
I have the PDF file for the windlass, I will send it to you if it will help you.
PM me as I have to email it to you. The size of the file is too large to be uploaded here.

These are great. thank you. The boat is a 1998 and I have owned it since 2004 and I have never removed the motor or gear box even though I have maintained the on deck section every year.
Any advice on how to remove the gear box with minimal amount of knuckle loss and damage?.

From the pictures it seems we both have the same windlass which I understood to be the Freedom 800 yet the manuals don’t seem to show that. Which of the manuals do you consider to be the one for your unit.

Any my suggestion or give up. I can tell it is leaking a bit of oil.

I gave up trying to remove the gear box from the shaft. I used steering wheel puller with no luck. On page 8 of the manual there is a breakout diagram. But I could not tell if the shaft is supposed to slide up or down. There appears to be a key on the shaft on the gearbox side. It may be time to call the manufacturer.
Let us know if you succeeded in removing it. Mine did not leak oil. It was water when it rained. Needed new seals.
We're you able to download the manuals?

ISpoke to Maxwell. By removing Cotter pin and unscrewing the ring it should come down. If it’s not the gearbox has probably corroded to shaft. He suggested the usual, PB Blaster, heat and banging a few times around where it should break open. Don’t bang directly on shaft but can around it. If can’t get it apart on way to windlass graveyard. Eventually the gear box will seize and won’t spin. At that time will have to take off with sawsall in order to replace with his suggestion RC88.
Sounds like very poor design. It seems water can get in gearbox eventually causing a mix of saltwater and oil in the gear box that corrodes all specially with a little electrolysis mixed in. If you don’t take the gearbox apart regularly your fate is sealed.
i did get and download the manual. Thank you.
