Steering issues

I recently bought a 2002 Catalina 36. When under moderate engine power the rudder will pull further from center when deflected to either side. It will in fact continue all the way to the stops. Clearly I have an issue but I'm not sure where to start. Any suggestions?

Thanks

I think you need to share more information. The prop wash is moving the rudder to one side or the other (with hands off the wheel/wheel unlocked???)?

Yes. If i steer away from center to either side the wheel will pull even farther away. If someone at helm were to let go it would go all the way to the stops. I have not seen this before on other boats. If normal then i guess I'll just use the wheel brake.
Thanks for the responses.

If you let the wheel go while motoring, this wil happen every time.  It's normal.

Round and Round you go!

Always engage the auto-pilot or wheel brake before walking away from the helm.
