2017 New Sails Furling Main and Genoa

Checking to see if anyone has purchased new sails recently.  Specifically for the roller furling main on a MKII. There looks to be quite a few options out there today.  Curious to see if anyone has tried a laminate or other technology for their furling main.

At 17 years, mine have done their duty.  :)

My boat has the roller furling main and I purchased new sails last year. I got the endurance series from Ullman Sails and have been very happy with them.

As the Great Lakes rep for Mack Sails and rigging sold many sails to c36 owners and members of this list. More than happy to get you a quote at a discounted c36 price structure. Email me off line at chiclasser1@yahoo.com

Chic, in addition to giving yourself a "shout-out", could you address the original poster's question, i.e. provide some input into types of sailcloth, modern designs etc.?

Nick, I provided an off line email to discuss anyone's particular needs and questions. I could write a book about sail design, cloth, trim and Rigging. Do you race, do you cruise, how old are you, are you a tweaker or a Sunday sailor, where do you live, the list goes on and on and on. Candidly, much better to discuss individuals needs and wants on a one to one basis. Nick, If you any questions about your boat feel free to contact me off line about your needs and we can discuss. You have my email address.

That's not the purpose of these forums. There are endless discussions here about anchor choices, sail trim, and all manner of things which are very individualized. That is as it should be. This is a forum to share knowledge, not to direct communications away from the group. Share your knowledge, so that all C36 sailors may benefit!

What got me going was a Quantum sails (very interesting) article on furling main options and an article by a British company.  I have a condition. I'm a geek and love tech of all types.

Based on the Quantum article and discussion about stretch., I'm going to check into a laminate furling main and standard genoa.

I would not buy a laminate sail unless it was taken off after every use and stored properly.  A few years back I bought a laminate sail from a very good loft. From rolling it up and leaving it up in the Florida hot sun year around it developed cracks and become unusable in three years. Subsequently I bought a Dacron furling jib from Chic three years ago. I like it very much, so last year when I was getting ready to sail to Cuba I bought a Dacron main from Chic.

This winter I bought a North Sails 140% Furling Genoa, 3DL Marathon 600.  I'm principally a cruiser that gets into the occasional weekend race.  I had the choice of laminate or a tri-radial Dacron, but wanted the better performance as the majority of the driving force is the head sail of our boats.  I estimate that I paid a couple thousand extra for the laminate, and still think it worthwhile after a couple months on the boat.  I chose to reduce to a 140, rather than the allowed 155% because of our prevailing winds (Great Lakes), tall mast, and typically short-handing the boat makes it easier to handle the slightly smaller sail. The laminate is also noticeably lighter than the Dacron equivalent. All of this was discussed at length with my sail maker's representative from North on my boat during an evening sail, which is the only way to make this decision.  Personally, I would not think about dropping a few thousand dollars based only on advice from the internet without consulting an expert who discusses sailing goals, location, and materials.

I purchased a new cruising RF main this year from my local Doyle loft. Your bog standard, 8 oz. Dacron cruising sail. Fit, finish, shape under sail, top notch. Furls and unfurls as easy as pie.

Cheers

Just ordered a new furling main and miter cut Genoa from Chic Lasser at Mack sails.  Lots of good recommendations.  really like the miter cut on the Genoa and feel it's a really good compromise between cross-cut and radial.

i feel I'm getting a better sail at a lower price than competitors.

update when they get here.   Went with a 140 with 100 foam luff.
