i have a fumes leak at the connection of the exhaust manifold and the elbow. I undid the connection, retightened the fitting at the end of the elbow, put in a new gasket and tightened the clamp as much as felt comfortable. I ran the engine and to my disappointment I still see a small plume of smoke coming out at the location. I saw the same thing at the beginning of last season and left it as minor only to find the back of the engine with black soot at the end of the season. Should I use two gaskets?

I'm a little confused by your post. Is it leaking between the manifold and the flange, or is it leaking between the flange and the elbow?
If its at the flange/manifold connection, I would imagine you would also have a leak of antifeeze there.
If its at the flange to elbow connection, I'm amazed you were able to "retighten" since usually after a season the damned thing is frozen solid. In any event, if its at the latter, did you use pipe dope on the threads? If not, you should have, in order to have a good seal (use a high temperature pipe sealant). .

No antifreeze leak. What you mention was my mistake last year which is probably why I was able to take the flange off the elbow easily. I put pipe dope on it and I thought tightened it well now but still get the smoke. Maybe I need to take it apart again and redo with more pipe dope. Thought I had put a lot on there. Is there a recommended product or are they more or less the same?

Did you just redo it? The pipe dope will burn off for a while when new, and make a little smoke (different smell from diesel exhaust).
If not, then yes, I imagine you should take it apart and redo, tighten with 2 big pipe wrenches.
Awful job to have to do over. You are sure the elbow itself is sound and not leaking or overly corroded?.
