Opening ports

With the heavy rains we've had this winter I noticed my starboard side opening ports are leaking in the latch area.  Anyone encounter this problem.  I believe these are the original ports.  I'm sure there will be a variety of experiences and fixes.  Just wondering what the most common problem has been lately.  Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill and Clara,
There are rubber rings in the outside part of the latch that loose their shape and start to leak. You can replace them. To remove the rubber ring, pop open the cover button where the latch swings from. Underneath is a screw - open that and remove the ring. You can buy new ones at Home Depot plumbing area. I replaced all of mine and applied Lanacote before reassembling. No more leaking. Also apply Lanacote ( $ 13.00 at West Marine) to the rubber seal at the edge of the port. These ports are known to leak in Catalinas.

Bill,
Depending on where the leak is actually coming from, and which style opening ports you have, the fix could be as simple as smearing a bit of sealant on the gap in the lower part of the outside frame.  Another fix that seems to work for lots of people is to thoroughly clean both the window and gasket, and then smear a bit of food-grade silicone on the gasket (which you can get from a local scuba dive shop).  Hope this helps.

Went to the boat this last weekend.  As it turned out at the seams where the exterior metal frames come together the sealant was degrading.  I stripped the old sealant out and laid in new sealant.  Problem solved.  These weren't the originals.  The PO replaced them in 2010 with Lewmars.  Hope this helps someone else.
