EV autopilot sensor location

My old ST4000 autopilot gave up last year and looking at the Raymarine EV systems as a replacement. In researching these systems I've found the new heading sensor mounting location has more options but is still sensitive to interference. Curious where others that have the EV system mounted the Heading Control Sensor and Motor Control unit.

I mounted mine out of the way on the vertical surface right behind where you stand behind the wheel underneath, of course).  You can see the two screw heads facing out towards the swim platform.

I have a 3-36,MkI, #1245, delivered in Fall '92
Spent Nov '13 replacing the ped.guard with a a 1-1/4" angled one
then mounted new Navpods for new instrumentation (Tri Data Wind head units)& a pedestal mounted Raymarine chartplotter/radar combo.

This Past Nov '14 I finally replaced the original St400  auto pilot with the completely new head unit, wheel drive motor and the EV1 and ACU100...the latter two items are afixed to the aft cabin bulkhead...extreme aft end, vertically mounted.

What I learned from an error in installation and consult with Raymarine (by phone) is that the two units must be placed further apart than the 1 meter (supplied) cable allows.  The ACU100 provides interference with the operation of the electronic compass (the EV1). I had to order a 3 (?) meter cable, which permitted me to keep the ACU100 mounted on the extreme strbd side (next to the aft 'hanging locker' and moving the EV1 to the extreme port side of the same aft  bulkhead...Result...no interference!

Thanks Brian, exactly the the kind of feedback I was looking for. The cables supplied with the systems are very limiting for positioning the components

Howdy,

Just finished this install myself as well, actually.  I mounted the Motor control unit in the cabinet directly next to the electrical panel (making for easy electrical connections there), and mounted the heading control sensor underneath the couch/dinette section which is directly forward from the sink, running a longer drop-cable back under the 12v battery compartment and up to the motor control.

I was a bit worried that the sensor might be thrown off by the proximity to the water heater (primarily aluminum, at least), but so far it seems to be working fine.

Hi Gary
I installed the Control module on the aft cabin bulkhead up close to cockpit sole. Maybe about 1 foot off centerline to starboard. The gyro under the aft cabin floor above water tank, close to centerline. Maybe a foot fwd of bulkhead.
 Unit works well.

On my MK1, mounted the control module in the aft cabin, inside the port storage locker, up high on the forward bulkhead.  The gyro on the port side of the rear center water tank.  No issues so far.  Here are two photos of the locations.
