C36 muffler replacement

Hi,

After our recent purchase of our 1987 Catalina 36 we are now getting ready to do some engine work & we're wondering if anyone has any experience replacing the muffler on their boat? Ours is original & we are considering replacing it with the custom Aqua Lift muffler from Catalina Direct. Has anyone tried this model or have any recommendations for this type repair?

Thanks!

Katie

Hi Katie, and everyone,

Please try searching for answers when you have a question like this that has probably been asked before. Our forum has more than 20,000 posts covering almost a decade of questions and answers among C36 owners, so it's very likely that you'll find what you need with a simple search.

For example, a search for "muffler replacement" yields three pages of results.

Thanks, and good luck with your project!

Yeah, he's right.

It's a very common project.

I replaced my old broken (no hump hose) muffler with the CD muffler, which features 1-5/8" o.d inlet and outlet like the original.

Make sure you install a hump hose between the muffler and the riser.

Have new exhaust riser gaskets and studs and nuts too.
And copper-based anti-seize for reassemble and future disassembly - you'll be glad you did when you go back in.

Could I ask why you are considering replacing it? Repairing it may be an option. And any reason you feel that it's in need of replacement might be premature.

Katie,

What engine is this on?
I recently worked with Catalina owners to replace the crappy Aqualift with a new Centek side inlet/top outlet, and the exhaust riser with the water-cooled riser from Westerbeke.

These were with an M-25XP, an M-25XPB, and a Beta 20.  The design works very well together.  I am not familiar with the C36 engine space layout, but if you want more into, just PM or email me off list.
