Hi All!
I currently have an icom vhf model 402(?) with remote mic. It was installed by the po and is located on the port coaming adjacent to the pedestal. It's an exposed location and now the cord and connector have been abused enough that it's no longer working. My local marine store is pushing replacement of the whole system as the best option. I'd prefer a cheaper option, as I only need a replacement mic and bulkhead fitting.
I'd be interested in comments on alternative remote ic projects and/or latest info on wireless options.

I installed a RAM mic inside the stbd coaming compartment, just for that reason. Just about any place in the cockpit makes the connections prone to breakage, except inside the coaming compartment. I chose the stbd side because it's closer to the nav station. As an added bonus, the compartment acts like a speaker enclosure, and amplifies the sound from the RAM mic when it's in there. I also put a 12V outlet in the compartment. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info, Tom, that location certainly seems to be the best spot in the cockpit. How'd you run the cabling and where's the access from the aft cabin to the cockpit?

From memory (I sold Julandra 5 yrs ago, and did this project about 20 yrs ago!), I ran the wires along the hull/deck joint on the stbd side into the lazarette (there were already some wires running along the hull/deck joint). Taking out the "floorboards" in the lazarette allowed me to get into the lazarette, and reach forward along the hull to the coaming compartment. Perhaps someone with a MkI can confirm that my memory is correct, and you can actually do this?!?!?!

On my 1987 I was able to just go straight aft and then down, then ran it under the false floor of the aft cabin cabinet. Then I had to unscrew the wooden cover of the aft cabin bench. I ran the cable alongside the water tankage there. The tricky, and hand marring, part of the exercise was those last few inches from there to the back of the panel.
My boat has several Raymarine cables making that same run, so it's pretty easy to follow and band together for tidiness.

This looks like what your looking for? I have mine on the starboard aft coming and it has been than 12 years. Under the bimini and adjacent to the helm. Ran wires from radio under shelf (curtain for aft cabin) to starboard along existing wire race to back lazerette and coming.

Note to explain why I went under shelf from compainway to starboard shelf is I keep my radio accessible from cockpit. as shown here in earlier photo. I've since upgraded radio and added remote mic.
