Hatch - rebedding - advice needed

One of my winter projects is to stop the leaks from the forward v-berth hatch.

After carefully watching where water enters and drips during a rain storm last fall I am pretty sure that is coming through the hatch to deck "seal" and not through the plexiglass seal.

My boat is 15 years old so I am going to tackle rebedding all the hatches. I have them all off and please to see no deck/core damage.

Below is picture of the factory putty type of chalking /sealer that was left on the deck after the hatch removal.

I have all the old chalking clean up and will be ready in the next couple of weeks of getting the hatches back on the boat.

My questions are around what type of bedding / chalking product to use?

I utilize Butyl tape for rebedding other deck hardware such as stanchions, but I wanted to solicit feedback from others who have tackled this work.

Also since I have the hatches off should I do anything else to them? They seem to be in pretty good shape. I was thinking about applying a coat of resin around the perimeter of the "hole" to ensure that the deck core is protected.

Thanks in advance..

Ralph two years ago I replaced the lens on one of mine and had to remove it. When I reinstalled I used butyl tape and it was easy. Water tight from day one. Make sure to put butyl on the screws before putting them in.

I agree. I used butyl tape on our main saloon hatch (old Bomar), works great. Needed two thicknesses of tape on the frame to deck.

I completely rebuild all of my 1987 hatches 2 years ago. sandblasted, and powder coated, new plexi glass set in butyl tape and then sealed the edges with industrial glazing silicone. Installed the hatches with butyl tape. Better than new.:)

Make sure you clean all of the surfaces of old caulking and it is a good idea to seal any exposed edges of the cabin top to prevent and moisture intrusion.

I am in the middle of fixing my forward v-berth hatch leak. It looks like the previous sealant on my hatch was silicone (it is a pain to get it completely removed). Upon removing the hatch I found a small amount of water intrusion into the deck. I am letting that dry and afterwards will seal the exposed edges with thinned epoxy....Yes, it is a "belt and suspenders" "approach, but I want to keep water out of the core. I also enlarged the deck screw holes (with a forstner bit) and will fill those with thickened epoxy. After that sets up, I will drill pilot holes and use butyl tape as the preferred sealant.

May I ask you guys where do you buy the butyl tape, and in what width?  I am planning on removing and resealing the port lights on my boat, and am looking for the best (and easiest to use) product for the job.

Thank you,

Gary

Hi, you might want to check and see if you have the same problem as I had.  My hatch was rebedded twice before realizing that the leak was not through the sealant, but rather through a rivet in the hinge that merely looked like it was coming through the sealant.  In the end, I simply squirted some sealant into the offending rivet and voila!...it hasn't leaked in almost a year and a half...and best of all, I didn't have to buy a new hatch!  Anyway, hope this helps--JAS

Oops...I thought this was a new thread.  As it turns out, I already commented on it above.

I purchased my Butyl tape from on EBay.  It was significantly cheaper than purchasing through a marina or West marine, FWIW.
