Gear shift shaft lateral movement

The gear shift shaft that exits the pedestal that the shift lever attaches to moves laterally about one inch in and out from the opening on the pedestal. After looking at the Edson literature and diagrams this doesn't look like it should have any lateral movement at all unless I'm missing something. I discovered this after I started the motor while the gear shift was in the forward position. Error on my part. I'm not positive but I don't think this movement took place prior to this. I live about 5 hours from my boat and didn't have time to get into the pedestal to check it out. Any thoughts. There is a small screw that threads into the aluminum support and fits into a groove machined in the shaft to prevent lateral movement. You need to remove the compass and have a look to see if that screw is missing or has backed out. Hope this helps.

Bill, you might want to create a signature, it will be appended at the bottom of your posts and will make it easier for people to assist as they will know more about your boat and area of operation. Go to the top left of the page and click UserCP, then on the next page left side at the top click "Edit Signature".
