Some of you may have noticed article in Cruising magazine about this subject. It made a believable story for using aluminum anodes instead of my usual zincs. Also I believe the ones for our engines are zinc.
What are people using?

I have always used zinc anodes. Haven't read the article yet.

I have also. The article speaks of the zincs getting a white coating on them and being ineffective if in brackish or fresh water. I kept my boat in the CT river for several years and remember the white coating on my zincs at fall haul out.

I have a question regarding zinc. When I purchased my c36 - I found several sizes of zincs amount other tools that came with the boat. The one that is 1/4" goes on the heat exchanger. I also found two other sizes that are more like 3/8" and 1/2" in diameter that screws into an end-cap. Where do they go? Does the water heater need zinc? Is there one on the engine? If so where are they located at?

Haro, I figure you have an M25 series engine. There is ONLY ONE zinc, in the HX shell. That's it.
The water heater has an OPTIONAL anode that replaces the drain valve on the front of the heater. Most folks we know of don't have one. They are available from Seaward (Whale bought them a few years ago, so you'll have to find a distributor - I bought a new heater a few months ago and got a great price from Sure Marine in Seattle).

I too read the Cruising World article with interest. I keep my boat on the St. Marks River. Way up the river where the water is completely fresh. But All my sailing and cruising is out in the Gulf of Mexico in salt. I've seen this white coating on my heat exchanger zinc. Now I'm confused as to what I should use since my system is exposed to complete fresh, complete salt and of course a mix in between. Should I just ignore this issue and keep the zinc zincs?
Help me oh wise ones.
