Engine starting amps

I have a reserve starting battery that has died, as a seperate unit to my 2 4d house bank. I have had the regular marine starting battery group 24 size, but have been disapointed with it's serviceability, and want to replace it witha better battery. Thus my question, how much amp capacity does it take to start a M-35a engine? I also think my reserve battery is wired to run the windlass, so would a deep cycle battery here be appropriate? I also have one of those emergency starting battery units, but it would not start my engine yesterday. It would turn it over, but not fast enough to fire it up.
As always this forum provide much appreciated help, which is greatly appreciated.

A lot of people start the engine on the house bank and keep the start battery just for emergency. Lots of cranking power that way.
