We have clean sea water collecting in the port side of the stern berth, soaking the mattress. The starboard side is dry. Any suggestions as to source of the leak? Rudder post packing?

SailorJo, there are a lot of differences back there between and within the various models of C36 that Catalina built. It would be a benefit to you and the other members who may be able to help if you created a signature and filled in your boat details, such as Year, Hull Number, engine, keel and rig configuration. Click UserCP at the top left and create it in there.
Being it is primarily on the port side I would look at the exhaust system as well. It is salt water and runs along the port side.

I have edited my signature. I think the source of the water is from the prop shaft as the packing is not sealing properly. The water is splashing up. This will most likely mean a major job at next haul-out as the whole unit will have to be replaced.

what type of packing gland do you have? If it's the standard/factory installed packing gland, you may be able to tighten it, or replace the packing (quickly) while the boat is in the water. If it's a dripless, bellows type, like a PSS for example, that should not leak at all and you'd need to check the bellows for a tear or other failure. That would indeed require the boat to be on the hard so it could be repaired.
A search of the forum finds quite a few threads on this topic; a couple below.
