I'm getting rust colored dust around my engine mounts. Are they about to go? Can I finish the season with them? What happens when they go?

All the mounts?
Of just on the rear mounts, there was a recent post about red dust that was found to be from the heat wrap on the exhaust system falling onto the engine.

And also red dust from the damper plate wearing out. Is it rattling?
I think, not sure, the engine mounts are black rubber... hard to imagine if they wear you'd get rust colored dust rather than black.
I was the ne with the insulation wear problem. I'd check that first.

Instead starting a new thread, this seemed a good spot to address my issue. I'm finding some black "dust" along side one mount. I seem to recall that this is an indication the mount is failing. Anticipating that they may need to be replaced, I have read many of the various threads and did not find a consensus. Outside of cost issue, there seemed to be issues regarding mounting studs, elongated holes for proper alignment, moving of engine, etc. Different brands include the Vetus K75, Bushing DF-100, OEM product from Marine Diesel Direct, and RD mount. For the M35B in our '98, what is recommended and are there any installation issues?

If the dust is around the starboard rear mount, make sure it's not just bits of foam from the air cleaner. A failing mount indication is sometimes engine vibrations, even in neutral, in the low RPM ranges.

David, earlier this year I decided to take on quite a few semi-involved projects with our 1999 model and then ran into some snags that forced me to postpone some of them. One was replacing the motor mounts.
I purchased Vetus K-75 mounts somewhat impetuously and then discovered that the hole patterns do not match. I was not planning to remove the engine to epoxy and re-drill holes, but rather just jack up and replace one pair at a time, then re-align.
I have other projects more pressing, so not sure what I am eventually going to do about this one. Hope that info helps a little.

Duane, I decided to have our mechanic check out our mounts and he said they were fine. So I guess I saved a few bucks for use on other projects. He also thought the original mounts used are of good quality and would last a long time.
