Replacing fresh water hoses

I found the source of a slow water leak (into the bildge), there is a pvc "t" that sends hot water to both the galley sink and head sink. The "t" was cracked, possiblely by too much pressure from a hose clamp. I just found the crack during Spring commissioning, it bugged me all last summer. Anyway, while replacing the "t" I noticed a brown scale inside the short section of hose from the "t" to the galley sink, not so much in the hose that goes to the head sink. I'm about to replace that short section of hose, easy job. However, Slowdance is a '95, maybe it's time to replace all the fresh water hoses. Has anyone tackeled this? Do you wish you wouldn't have? We only drink bottled water on board but use water tank water for dishes and some cooking. I use water freshener but the water often has a 'sulfur' oder. This is awlful wordy, sorry.

Slowdance,

May I suggest that you try flushing your fresh water system with a solution of bleach first, before you think about tackling a full hose replacement.

Any crud in the fresh water system should be easily eliminated by a bleach+ fresh water blend, added to your fresh water tank. Let the solution sit over night and then rinse, rinse, rinse!!!

Do all tanks and hoses at once.

Perhaps the group could suggest a water/bleach ratio mix. If not, I'd try 1/2 cup bleach in each full tank of fresh water. Don't forget to remove and clean the screen, on the water pump, where the fresh water enters the pump.

I only use two aft tanks for short cruises. The 3rd tank for extended cruising. A couple of times a year I clean the filter into the pump then with both tanks empty I empty 1/2 abottle of white vinegar into each and add about agllon or so of fresh water let sit for a while then slowly fill and run the faucets to keep pace with the filling speed for 10 minutes or so. Any vinegar residue left is harmless. We also have a brita water filter on the galley faucet. The sulphur smell is caused from the chlorine treated town water left in the pipes after the boat has not been used for a spell.

I am in the process of replacing our complete water system. We are using PEX for the piping and colour coding. White pipe for tank feeds, blue cold water, red hot water. I am also adding a charcol filter and an expansion tank to keep a more even pressure. I will have a better idea in the next week about how I feel about doing it but I am possitive it will be a lot better than the existing system. After all PEX is designed for drinking water and it is now being used by a number of builders. PEX is easy to install, There are a large variety fitings, changes are easy to make as is maintenance.

I will put a few pics up after this week end.

Thanks to all....I just replaced the "t" and a couple sections of short hose...went very smoothly. I do use a strong bleach solution each Spring and a water freshener each fill-up. I also only use the rear tanks so that water doesn't sit in the tanks for any long period. Never thought about the water filter...huh. That'll be on the "to do" list tomorrow. As I said we use the .5 ltr bottles of water for drinking, coffee and cooking but use tap water for dishes and clean-up.

Wow, Wavelength you're gonna be a busy guy.

What I did a few years ago was I added a (what Lowes refers to as) full house water filter that is mounted inside one of the compartments in the main salon. It filters all of the potable water as it comes through the manifold. I replace the large paper filter twice a year. I too add ater refresher every time I fill each of the water tanks. That seems to work pretty well for us.

I seem to recall that our C36 Owner's Manual talks about this and gives the proportions of water & bleach
