Has anyone installed a Lewmar folding wheel on a MKI?
I've been toying with the idea of installing one and wondered if anyone else has done it that could offer any insights on if they think it was worth the expense and if it is compatable with a wheelpilot autopilot.
I was thinking I might be able to go up from a 32" wheel to a 36" to make steering from the rail/stern perch seats easier, though it may make getting around the wheel underway too difficult. Has anyone done this?

I don;t know about the folding wheel and wheel pilot matching but as far as size goes I have a 40" Edson Destroyer wheel on my MKI and have no problem moving forward or aft, esp. while under sail. I lalso do alot of single handed sailing makes sitting and handling the wheel easy
Hope that helps

Sorry that I can't give you feedback regarding the MKI. I did recently switch form a 36" fixed wheel to the 36" folding wheel on my MKII and I have been happy with that change / upgrade. I need to add that the Autohelm ST4000 converted over fine, but I needed new (increased size) clamps to attach the wheel-pilot as the spokes of the Lewmar folding wheel are a larger diameter.
If you decide to upgrade to a 36" fixed wheel, let me know as I am willing to sell mine at a good price.

Bill,
One of the first things I did on Julandra (1987 MkI) was to upgrade the wheel from the stock 32" wheel to a 40" wheel, which is what was eventually standard on the MkII. It made a big difference. Much easier to steer from the rail, and it was not harder to get around. Don't know much about the folding wheel.

Thanks for the input. They make a 40" folder as well, so I might consider that.
I'm in the market for a autopilot as well once I get that figured out I'll see what's left in the budget.

I put on a 40" Lewmar folding wheel and have a fixed 40" wheel available if someone is interested.
