Installing ST 4000 on a Lewmar folding wheel

I splurged on the 40" Lewmar folding wheel and have an installation question. The Lewmar wheel is a dish shaped wheel and I don't have the "spacers" that are mentioned to fit the ST4000 to that type wheel. For those of you with the same set up, do you really need the spacers or will it work properly without them?

Steve, I don't know about the 40 " wheel, but I have the 36" wheel and used neoprene 1/2 " dia , 1/8" thick fawcet gaskets you can purchase at any hardware store . They worked fine for me.
