Another question for the group in two parts. What is the difference between the M25 and the M25XP, and which engine would most likely be installed on my 1987 MKI?
I'm repowering, and I ordered an M25XP. Hopefully, IF I had the M25 installed, it won't be too much of a hassle installing the XP.
Thoughts would be appreciated!

Essentially the same engines, XP has 2 more HP (23 instead of 21), the three inch HX and the corrected alternator bracket, them's the only differences I recall. Depends when in '87 your boat was made, there may have been some M25s left over. My '86 C34 has the M25, maybe some early '87s did, too. I've since installed the bracket and the larger HX, so except for the 2 hp, I have an XP!!!

If I remember correctly from my HIN, I've got a July baby, so that could well be an XP. In either case, I guess it doesn't sound like too much of a big deal either way.
Thanks for the help Stu.

Adam,
I overhauled my 25XP a few years ago and questioned if a replacement may be a better option. Would you be willing to share with us the cost of a new engine?
Did you consider the Beta engine, also a Kabota base engine?

Well, from what I understand they no longer make the M25 series engines. Maybe someone with a little more knowledge could shed some light on that, but I couldn't find any brand new M25s on line.
I ordered a rebuilt M25XP from Schooner Bay Imported Motors for $4,200 shipped. That price included the engine itself, starter, alternator, raw water pump and packaging. I ordered the engine mounts seperately.
I asked the yard I'm layed up in if they would do my rebuild a couple months ago, and after taking a look at the engine, they decided it was a lost cause and suggested a replacement/upgrade. "Conveniently", the yard's engine guy happened to be a dealer for some manufacturer (can't remember which one-not Universal though). In any case they tried to sell me this upgraded replacement for $7,500 plus installation. I considered it for a while until I realized they were talking about an 18 horsepower engine! Needless to say, I began exploring other options, and found the M25XP I have on order now.
I'll try to upload some pictures when the instal is complete.

Just an FYI.....
I ordered my replacement this spring directly from Catalina Yachts in Largo Fl. Seems they had a few new crate motors left in stock from when they switched to the Yanmars. The motor comes with everything needed to swap it out including the motor mounts and transmission! Price shipped to my door was $5100.....what a steal, this is for a brand new crate motor from Universal. When I ordered they had three left at this price. Good Luck:)
