My name is Derrick Kershaw and I reside on Phillip Island in Victoria, Australia.
I recently imported a 2005 model Catalina Mk11, "CASPIAN", Hull 2244. I am presently servicing the M35B engine which has done 250 hours. I was unable to replace the anode in the heat exchanger as the old one had welded itself in. I have removed the exchanger unit, cleared the blockage and am about to put the unit end caps back on. The washers are black, about 5mm thick and appear in good order. In the spares kit that came with the boat are two O rings and 2 beige coloured washers which are only 2mm thick and the bag has no spares number on it. After all that my simple question is are the beige washers OK or should I stick with the original black ones?

I have a 1999 C36 with 1500 hrs on my M35B and have always re-used the old black washers when I cleaned out the anode bits and replaced the anode. I have never had a leak but have always lined up the "groove impressions" on the old washer with the end of the exchanger when retightening the end bolt.

One thing to be careful of: The brackets that are welded to the HX are not welded on very well - at least they weren't on my (1998) boat. Maybe the newer ones have a better weld, but on mine the weld was coming loose but it was difficult to see because of the paint over it. I had them re welded.

In reply to Derricks question, you only need need the large neoprene end gaskets to seal the HE end plates. The small o-rings are for the bolt and go between the end plate and the neoprene gasket. I have't used any other washers to replace a zinc.
