I have a Garhauer RV20 rigid vang installed by a PO who clearly did not follow the OEM printed instructions. The geometry is incorrect and there is zero lift, meaning anyone over 5'5" with a moments inattention is destined for a head strike with the mainsheet slack and sail doused without using the topping lift.

I have already serviced the unit. The internal springs and tube are clean with no deformation, lubricated, and in good condition.

My issue is with reinstallation and tensioning. Following the old OEM instructions to fully compress from zero tension causes the blocks to bottom out long before the strut reaches fifty percent compression. As currently mounted, the vang could never lift the boom five to ten percent above level (actual is -10) as currently recommended by Garhauer. I am planning to relocate the mount on the boom, the mast mount is in the correct location. Which leads to my question since the mount location will be different depending on the approach.

Because verbal guidance from Garhauer and their written instructions do not align on preloading and any need to do it or not, could anyone with hands-on experience advise on the correct approach to ensure proper function?
