When I got the dodger built, I got them to add the handholds on the side of the dodger. I have also replaced the safety lines next to the cockpit with a solid stainless steel hand rail.
Now, I always thought it was a great idea, but recently I sailed my other 375 that does not  have these features in some really rough weather (40kns and 4m seas). Wow - it was scary going up on deck without the reassurance of these hand holds.
So - I recommend this improvement to all sailers.
