New cutlass bearing

I just replaced my cutlass bearing. I now have a high pitched noise at low rpm.s. The noise occurs under sail with the engine in neutral also. Does the bearing to be broke in?

While it is supposedly OK to sail with the transmission in neutral, putting it in REVERSE (not forward) will stop the shaft and probably stop that noise.

thanks Duane, yes putting the boat in nuetral does stop the noise. the concern is why is there a noise?
do cutlass bearings need to be broken in. has anyone expierenced this after changing there bearing?

Bill, I am confused because your post said the noise does not stop with the engine in neutral under sail.

For your information, my boat (with or without a new cutless bearing) makes a whirring noise while sailing from the prop turning with the transmission in neutral. That is the main reason I keep the transmission in reverse while sailing with the engine off.

With the transmission engaged, I hear only two noises other than the engine: Occasionally the dripless shaft seal starts clattering. I fix that by reducing RPM until it stops and then ease up the speed and it usually remains quiet. At low RPM, the clutch damper plates will clatter, too.

Did you do anything to the prop? I had a humm when I painted the prop. It stopped once the paint wore of the blade tips.

do you per chance have a dripless packing gland (PSS, etc.)??? From time to time I've had a high pitched squeak in mine at low rpms, including sailing in neutral. I had not properly 'burped' the air out of it, so there wasn't sufficient water to lube the sealing surfaces. Once the air was out, and water in, the noise vanished.
