Oberdorfer N202M on M35B ?

Has anyone with a M35B engine that switched from a Sherwood G-908 raw water pump to a Oberdorfer N202M-16 or N202M-15. Looking at the dimensioned drawings, the N202M will fit, except for the mounting screws. It looks like only one screw hole in the N202M will match with one of the two threaded mounts on the engine. It looks like an additional hole can be drilled in the mounting flange of the N202M, to bolt the unit on in the same orientation as the Sherwood.

Why not call DEPCO (800-445-1656) and ask them?

If you do call Depco can you report back here? That is an interesting swap since the Sherwood pump is very $$$$ from Universal and getting scarce outside of that. Hopefully the Oberdorfer is cheaper and easier to work with.

Does anyone have a reasonably priced source for the G908? I had one but they no longer carry that pump, you go to Sherwood's website and the listing for the G908 shows "not available". Nice.

The Oberdorfer is half the price of the Sherwood, all bronze with easy front plate access to change the impeller. I talked with George Cornelius at Depco. He could not confirm about comparable fits of these two pumps. They have the N202M-15 in stock and some N202M-16’s on order. The –16 has the same ½-14 FNPT threads, so I can use the fittings from the Sherwood. The –15 has 3/8-18 FNPT threads, so I would have to track down new fittings. I will be ordering a N202M-16. If it does not fit I can return it. If it does fit I will keep it and make the screw mount modifications. I will post the results here in a couple weeks.

That's great, please keep us updated. I just sent an enquiry to Depco and they confirmed that Sherwood has discontinued the G908 and you have to get it from Universal/Westerbeke part # 302837, cost from Depco $432.70, Torreson's price $475.97. That is a ridiculous price for such a simple pump. Hope the Oberdorfer works out.

I just bought a spare Sherwood (Westerbeke) to have on the boat and yes, the part number changed. Price with engie gasket was just under $400 from TDC in California.

I just googled Oberdorfer n202m-16 and came up with this link.

Sounds like you could buy one as a spare and come out the same or one and have $200 in the beer fund.

I agree that you should call DEPCO. I just put a Oberdorfer 202M-15 on my
M25-XP and the two holes lined up ok and the new Oberdorfer is working out fine. I had my Sherwood G908 rebuilt by DEPCO and can make somebody a very good deal if they would like a G908 as a backup. I sail on an inland lake and don't really need the backup water pump. If interested e-mail me at sakruse@bellsouth.net

With some low tech modifications the Oberdorfer 202M-16 does fit on the
M35B.

Wow, Nile, that is great news! With members sharing like this, is this organization fantastic, or what?

This would make a supper tech article, espcially since you have such good photos to work with. Can we encourage you to add a little prose and submit it to Larry Brandt, our MK II Tech Editor?

Unfortunately, the water pump mount for the M35A is totally different and it doesn't look like that mod will work on it. Possibly could still be done using the same concept but would need something brazed on to get correct height for the mounting tabs.
Fortunately, I just got a brand new Westerbeke 42175 G908 pump off eBay for 300 bucs. So I am OK for now I guess.

Just a FYI for ones with a M35A. I just used a N202m 16 Oberdorfer Pump in place of my Sherwood Water Pump. It only takes a little mod to make it fit. I used my dremel and about 2 min of work and it fit. The easiest mod there was I think. I have pictures but I need to figure out how to get them smaller so I can add then on here.

Couple a hundred bucks less for the Oberdorfer. Plus they still make them, Sherwood no longer makes the G908.

Here's the pictures Randy did, I shrunk them down to post them. Wow, what a simple little deal. And I just blew $300 plus bucks on a Sherwood! Thanks for that Randy, this will no doubt be very handy info in future as these boats age.
