Salt water impeller

Can anyone advise me on how to replace the raw water impeller. Is it necessary to remove the pump or can I just take the cover off and put the new one in. I heard you must reassemble loosely and start the engine before tightening everything down. Help.

Hoffa,
We must ask you to do two things. First, please update your signature, so that we don't have to call you Hoffa! Second, please tell us more about your boat. What year? What engine? What water pump? The answers to those questions will help us answer your questions. Please see this posting:

I have the same question re: changing the impeller on the raw water pump.
My engine is the m35B, 2000 MKII, #1896. The owners manual descibes the process by removing the entire pump, but can the impeller, and the rubber ring gasket be replaced by just removing the front of the pump?

I have hull 1889- I just remove the cover and change the impellor.Funny I've always done this myself (and on my C30) till this year -I had the yard do it and it failed after 150hrs. Don't think theres a connection-just ironic.

Hi Bill,
I just replaced mine last week. I just removed the hoses and then the cover. Dont forget to replace the paper gasket when you replace the impellor.
The engine manual has a pretty good diagram and instructions on replacing the impellor and also the whole pump.
