Will my lower standing rigging provide enough lateral support if I remove uppers?

I need to rebed chainplates for the uppers.  Using the four lowers to provide lateral support doesn't look like it would be a problem seeing how the mast is keel stepped.  But I thought I better check to make sure!

Thanks ya'll

I think you would be fine.  I have done the same rebedding the chain plates, and had no problems.  Remember to measure the threads on the turn block length, and count the turns you take off the turn block.  It will save alot of time when resetting the uppers.

I would have to believe you would be fine. The lowers would definitely hold it in place while you re-bed the uppers. I'd have more concern if the mast were stepped on the cabin top, but it is stepped to the keel and the partners are approximately 6' up from the keel and with forward, aft, and lowers in place I wouldn't be too concerned. If you were doing this with sails on or 50 knot winds and 6' seas I might have another opinion.

Joel,
You should be fine, but if you are concerned, why not use a couple of halyards to steady the rig.  Even if only led to stanchion bases will help.  Just a thought.

I'm not a rigger, BUT...I would feel much more secure about doing this if I also slacked the fore and aft stays to remove other potential loads from the upper mast.

Am I off track on this interpretation? Any riggers out there who can set me straight?

I haven't had the pleasure of doing this job (yet).

However, this past off-season our boat was on the hard next to that of another C36IA member, (Ron St. Onge (rstonge) MKII # 1384), and I got to observe him this spring doing exactly this job.  If I recall correctly (and If he reads this, he may correct me!)  he ran halyards on both sides down to the rail, tightened them,  and proceeded to disconnect ALL of the lateral shrouds while he was doing the rebedding.

Thanks everybody.  I just finished the lowers, now on to the uppers!  I'll let you know if the mast falls down...haha
