Stern gangway?

I have searched the forums without success in finding anything about makeing a stern gangway/passarele.  Has anyone come up with an idea to either use the swim ladder as a frame/support for a gangway, or removed the ladder and added a gangway to be able to walk on the boat from the dock using the stern walk through?

Thanks
Jay

Hi,
I'm in the process of installing a gangway on my C36 MK1 open stern.
i have already order a light one made out of composite.

My idea is to remove the actual swim ladder and fix the new gangway on the open transom. I will add a foldable ladder on the swim plataform.
Also add 3 life lines (dyneema) to close/open the transdom.

Previously, I was using the swim ladder to access the boat. I added some remouble wooden plataforms between steps.

Will see how it works

Eladio;
We did exactly that on hull 1041. The boarding ladder made it difficult to board the rubber inflatable dinghy when the boarding ladder was lowered in to the water. I removed the ladder but kept the hinges in place. I ran a length of stainless steel chain from the hinges to the ladder locking clips on the upper portion rail, very much as you have done with the dynema line. We will then use a folding ladder on the transom when I need to enter the boat from the water.
My concern was that, since I am alone much of the time, should I fall overboard - there is no way to pull the factory ladder down in to the water and re-gain entry back in to the boat. The pull down ladder, mounted on the platform of the transom, allows me to pull down the ladder and get beck in the boat from the water.
Although the boat is currently on the hard, I'll try and send along some pictures in a few days.

Thanks Bill,
I will very much appreciated to see those pictures. What sort /  brand for the foldable ladder did you installed?

Best regards,

Eladio

When we added a swim platform to our boat (its an older Mk 1 -- i.e., full width transom with no walk-through) we added a telescoping ladder.  Pictures here: www.catalina36.org/forum/technical-discussion/mk-i-transom-angle#comment-50452

I've seen similar telescoping ladders for sale in online catelogs, such as here: www.defender.com/product.jsp?id=1855125  and I assume there is a chandlery on your side of the pond that sells them as well.

This as well is an answer to Bill's safety concern as to how one might get back in the boat if sailing solo -- its easily reachable from the water to unfold (something that was not possible with our original ladder).

There is a fellow in the boat yard that made his own boarding gangway platform from two Harbor Freight aluminum painters work platforms joined together end to end. He apparently used the legs of the platform to serve as pieces to join the two sections together. He says he's been using it for years. https://www.harborfreight.com/40-in-lightweight-aluminum-work-platform-5...

Just a thought......Bill
