Steering system

I'll be taking my boat to the yard in about 2 weeks for haulout and bottom paint.  In addition I will ask them to inspect my steering system.  It's a 95 mk2 and in speaking with the PO it seems there has been no replacements within the system.  Does any one have an idea of what may be entailed regarding the scope and expense of this project.  No sarcasm please as I'm shuddering at the thought. Ha!  This yard charges about 119 per hour.  As I am no longer real flexible I wouldn't attempt this myself.  Thanks for any suggestions or advice.  Bill

Insofar as scope, check this out:  http://www.edsonmarine.com/support/PDFs/maintenance/chain_and_wire_steer...

Since your boat is >20 years old, at a minimum you might want to proactively replace the chain and cable, keeping the removed set as a spare.  Good time to check for excessive play in your rudder bearings too.

Thanks Niick.  Excellent article and suggestion.  In your experience have you found the additional components I.e. Sheaves, quadrant, idler plate etc to be subject to heavy wear thus needing replacement.  This boat has been primarily located in the SF Bay Area most of the time.  The engine has about 1700 hrs.  Your info as always has been very helpful. Yup.  Prior to 2004, the plate below the pedestal that holds the cable sheaves is made from steel and has been known to corrode.  After 2004 these were changed to aluminum.  This is something that should be inspected.

The other thing is to inspect your radial wheel if you have one.  These have been known to fail and there are various theories as to why this happens.  https://www.catalina36.org/forum/technical-discussion/radial-disk-shattered

Thanks all.  After all is said and done and paid for I'll let you know how it turns out.

Just picked up my boat from The yard in Sausalito.  The steering system checked out AOK.  Just needed to be lubricated. No sign of corrosion or meat hooks etc.  I was pleasantly surprised.   The dripless shaft seal needed to be replaced.  It was nine years old.  Also the raw water intake was completely corroded and also needed to be replaced.  Fresh bottom and peace of mind.  Just posting this to follow up on this thread.  Cheers
