Installing new X-5 autopilot on SCOTTFREE, remember mention of a special set of numerical settings that where worked out for the 36. Does anyone have them handy and are they applicable to the X-5? Sounds like they would be a frustration saver.
Thanks.

Smartpilot X-5 settings
Scottfree,
The settings are in the Owner's Encyclopedia. The nickname is the "Catalina Cocktail". Don't know if they apply to the X-5.

If you have the X-5 your best bet is to add the rudder position sensor and then do a custom set up for your vessel, unless someone else has a X-5 with RPS and good settings for the C-36. The X-5 has been a poor performer without the RPS in my experience, on a number of various boats. Once the RPS is added performance gets mach better..
RM tried to delete the RPS with fancy programming and a standard rate gyro, due to RPS install complaints, but fell short IMHO. The RPS will be money well spent..

Mainesail, or anybody else:
What I've read and been told is that the x-5 is just on the border of not being heavy duty enough for a c-36. Mainsail: Does what you write above imply that with the rudder position sensor it more or less resolves this issue, or is this something else entirely?

RPS has little to do with it being not robust enough. It is a wheel pilot and they are a little anemic. That being said my CS-36T is weighing in at over 18,500 pounds loaded for cruising and I am still waiting for my wheel drive to die so I can install the below deck unit.
It's more about how you trim the boat. Poor sail trim and helm balance will kill a WP faster than the sheer weigh of the boat. I have a friend with a C-30 who has killed three wheel drives in about 800nm of sailing. Mine has about 4500nm on it and my boat weighs nearly double. The differnece is I tune my boat to basically sail herself before pressing the "Auto" button..
I only bought a wheel drive because in the kit it is basically free, compared to the core pack, head and RPS bought separately, and was a quick install to get me going. I thought it would be dead the first season but she's still kicking...

Hello
You need to instal the rudder inadictor, which out it the X5 will not work correctly. There are photos of it being installed on the site I believe. I did it it is a little tough moving in the aft cabin by the pedastel enclosure but it goes fairly quickly.
BE SURE to mount the compass correctly that is also VERY important
