My 2003 Catalina 36 ("Martini") has a working Raymarine depth sounder and I want to add a second one (my previous boat had 2) in the front of the boat near the speed wheel and the Raymarine sensor. Would a second depth sounder (in-hull, made by Garmin) interfere with the existing factory-installed Raymarine? The Garmin depth sensor data would be displayed on the new Garmin chartplotter-the Raymarine has its own display.
Thanks. Jack

What multifunction display do you have and what instruments?

David, I have Raymarine depth, wind, speed and the new chartplotter is a Garmin 1042.

A better option than drilling another hole in your hull might be to feed the depth date to the Garmin as well.
Depends on what the data transmission system is. If its newer equipment using NMEA2000, its pretty easy; if its older stuff with NMEA0183, it may be a little trickier but there are gizmos out there ("multiplexers") that can convert Raymarine "Seatalk" to NMEA0183 and allow for multiple NMEA0183 devices to chat happily with each other. We used a Brookhouse multiplexer (they seem to be no longer in business, but there are others out there) to accomplish that (see photo), allowing our old Raymarine stuff (shuch as the Raymarine autopilot) and other gear (such as the VHF) to be integrated into our new B&G Zues 2 chartplotter. A quick browse online indicates that the Garmin 1042 will accept NMEA0183 data.
Tech editor Leslie Troyer wrote a couple of helpful articles on this stuff in Mainsheet a year or so back; they should be available in the technotes CD if you are a member.

Thanks. The second depth sounder is an In-hull unit and will connect to NMEA 2000. (The Raymarine instruments arei Seatalk.)
My condern is that the signals from the second depth sounder will interfere with the Raymarine sounder. I will go ahead and install
the second sounder and if there is a problem I will report it to the forum. Thanks again.

Just a FYI. Raymarine depth transducers work at 200khz. So it's not advisable to install another 200khx transducer. Garmin has a shoot thru glu down GT15M-IH transducer. It operates on mid-band CHIRP traditional sonar (85-165 kHz) and has a power rating of 600 W. It can be used with a hull deadrise angle between 0 and 25 degrees. My 2003 has a dead rise of about 20 degrees. I have three transducers in my boat. The shoot thru is a mid band chirp and it works breat.

True Wind-thanks. That is what I have ordered and received. Will run cable and hook up to NMEA in a few days.

If you ordered the chirp transducer it isn't NEA 2000. It connects to the back of the display.

TrueWind-you are right. The plug will not go thru my binnacle supply tube-I have a Garmin 545 below and a friend has a 545s-may trade and hook it up there. Probably cannot cut connector off, run the cable up the supply tube to the binnicle and reconnect?

Don't give up on it just yet. I do this for a living and there are ways to get this done. There are couple of things you can do. Remove some smaller wires with smaller connectors from your pedestal guard. Put the large transducer connector in first and then the smaller ones. Are you using both sides on your pedestal guard? If the large connector will not go into the pedestal guard at the bottom then remove enough fibergglass to get it to go into the bottom of the pedestal guard. If it will not come out at the top of the pedestal guard then remove some metal in order the get the connector thru. Remember the NavPod will cover the hole. Put as many wires in one side of the pedestal guard and use the other for the transducer connector. If none of that works, then you can cut the cable and splice them in a good quality transducer junction box. See attachment. You will probably need a transducer extension cable.
