I thought that someone also made an elliptical replacement rudder for our boats.
The Google boys did not come up with anything. Looks like Rudder craft has been around a while and has a broad enough product line to be sustainable.
I note the have no reviews on their site regarding the 36 rudder. I would ask them for a name of someone they sold one to and contact them for their opinion.
A bit more Googling did find a link to the Catalina 34 message board, it dicussed a much more effective elliptical rudder design by Allen Andrews and made by Foss in Orange County, Ca. A bit dated but the price noted was around $1800. It did indicate they made rudders for both the 34 & 36.

Thanks for the reply and I did contact them but the only sketch they had has for a shoal draft model or at least that appeared to be the case. I wonder how if at all that would affect the sailing characteristic on my boat as it is a standard keel I believe rudder craft is one of the rudders being sold by Catalina direct. The folks at rudders craft had some pics of rudders that snapped due to failure. I actually sawed my rudder in half to determine thr extend of the rust damage and there was some but it was hard to ascertain how weak or strong the rudder actually was at ths point. Anyone need part of a rudder as a spare part

i just wanted to pass along some info from contacting Foss foam. when i spoke to them they were willing to modify the rudder that they had to better work with a standard keel boat. I was also hoping some one may have had some experience with the rudders that they produce and could share any experience that they have had with the product. I did find a number of hits on the Catalina 34 web site where people have used the rudder that they produce with generally good results-- anyone have any direct experience with their rudder????? or could anyone speak in general about the effects of what appears to be a more elliptically design on a rudder?

Mike,
I Googled Elliptical rudder and came up with some pretty good pro and con discriptions on the Olsen 30 owner group. You may want to check it out. What I gathered was the elliptical was better at the limit and the standard had better feel in normal conditions.
