I’m finally, finally replacing my leaky, smelly, bilge polluting fuel tank which, as it turns out, was original to the boat (1995). For reasons I wont get into, I suspect it was leaking even while the PO still had it which means it probably failed within 4-8 years of the boats construction, perhaps sooner. I bought the boat in 2005. The failure point of the old tank appears to be a pinhole leak in a weld at the tank bottom. I didn’t think it worthwhile to try to repair a near 30-year-old tank!

If you are in So. California, the L.A. Metro area in particular and are looking to replace your fuel tank, my close-to-my-home source was IMCO, San Dimas, Ca., (909) 592-6162. The cost was $1,580 including the sensor and an added clean-out hatch which the original lacked, plus another $150 in taxes. IMCO says they consider this a one-off “custom” tank which means they’d much prefer an original tank to duplicate as oppose to say, a drawing. They would likely not know what you were talking about much less be able to help if you were to just call them up and ask for a price on a C-34-C36MkII fuel tank (part #A8248).

About a week after I picked it up I noticed they neglected to install the fuel return fitting. They added it promptly while I waited. It pays to have a source close to home so that issues like this can be addresses quickly and without the expense and hassle of shipping, even if someone else was paying. Finally, in the interests of full disclosure, other then this one particular tank and the fact that the Owner’s daughter and mine were on the same little kiddie’s soccer team some 20+ years ago, I have no past, present, etc. relationship with these folks and strictly speaking, this post is not an endorsement.
