My wife and I recently purchased our 1995 Catalina 36 MKII this past summer. Love this boat! Since that time, I have enjoyed making a list of improvements based some of the amazing content found on this web site. One of my first projects now that the boat is out for the Winter, is installing a new Groco ARG-S series raw water strainer near the front of the engine compartment making it more accessible to check and easier when winterizing the engine. I currently have a 1” ID hose running from the raw water intake seacock to the original raw water strainer, with a 1” ID hose running from the raw water strainer to a reduction fitting on the raw water pump that reduces from 1” ID to 5/8” ID. Is there problem with having the 5/8” ID fitting and hose coming directly from the raw water strainer to the 5/8” ID fitting on the raw water pump? It doesn’t seem it should make a difference as to where the ID gets reduced. Any thoughts or input is much appreciated. ,

On my raw water strainer the output of the strainer is 5/8. So I would think it is OK to reduce. The input is 1".

About Sail La Vie
I have to second what HARO said. I just looked at the output hose of my raw water strainer and it is 5/8" and that is on a M-35. Mine's running at 160 F. Therefore, I would feel safe in saying that there is adequate water being supplied to cool the engine through the 5/8ths hose..
