Prop replacement

Thank you in advance for any comments.

My diver informed me that my prop and bolts were badly corroded and to have my electrical system checked. The electrical problem was resolved, bad wire in bilge pump and ground wire on engine, but I now have to either have the prop repaired or replaced.

I have asked my diver to remove the prop and take it to Bay Propeller here in Alameda to see if Jeff can save it. If not can anyone guide me regarding the specs I need in order to select a new or used prop. My diver tells me i need to know the pitch and diameter.

Does anyone know offhand what they are? I know I have a one inch shaft.

Thanks,

Could you tell us what your boat year/model and especially engine info is? The prop pitch and size can vary depending on those factors.

Best to create a signature containing this info, it is done using the UserCP link at the top of the forum page.

My apologies, I have a 1984 Mk I with a Universal M25 engine.

Thanks,

Henry

Henry, it is typical, I believe, for the dia and pitch to be stamped on the hub of the prop. Did your diver look? It may have need some cleaning to see it, or perhaps the surface had actually corroded badly enough to obscure it.

Likely, someone with your boat model will chime in with the answer, anyway.

Good luck.

Henry,
I think that from the factory your boat came with either a 15x10x1 RH two blade, or a 15x9x1 RH three blade. Hope this helps.

Thank you Tom and Duane for your comments.

The prop was removed yesterday and I will see about the stamped markings later today when I visit the prop shop. The pic from my diver shows a lot of damage to the prop.

Thanks for the info, this association was one of the reasons I had confidence buying a C36 as my first boat almost two years ago.

Henry,
AGREED! Spread the word to fellow C36 (and C375) owners and have them join the association, too. It's your dues that supports this site.

Gentlemen,

The prop is a 15RH13. Too dezincified to have the missing material replaced by welding. It's a goner.

Thanks for the pic, fastbottoms.

Henry, that pitch seems high for your engine. Keep it as a large conversation piece and tell everyone a shark tried to eat it.

Matt from Fast Bottoms diving service is on top of things as evidenced by his post.

The two blade is indeed 15x13 RH and the choice for a three blade is either 15 x9 or 15 x10. The cost for a replacement two blade is off the chart so I am leaning toward a new three blade from Catalina Direct. If anybody knows another supplier please let me know. The quoted price is $548.

The Catalina Direct website recommends the 15 x 9 which is the prop Catalina would have supplied if the boat was ordered with a three blade instead of the standard two blade. However, when I submitted my order the tech at Catalina Direct recommended the 15 x 10 instead. I know this takes a bigger bite and I am concerned about overheating the engine in rough conditions. I have a call in to Warren at the Catalina factory but any comments in the meantime would be appreciated.

I realize that I will sacrifice some speed under sail with the three blade but I think the additional performance here in the bay area where conditions can get rough is worth the trade off. I do not plan on racing so a 1/4 or 1/2 knot difference in speed does not bother me.

Thanks as usual for your advice.

I went the 15x9 but have heard of many people using the 15x10. The only thing I worry about is the transmission as I had to have it re built a couple of years ago and the shop said not to over prop. Keep us posted what Catalina says

I replaced my prop with a new 3 blade 15x9 about a year ago, works great, top RPM is about 2800, how low do you want to take it with a 15x10? You don't want to lug it either.

I found it online, got it for something in the $450 range.. I'm thinking it came out of Florida.

I'll see if I have the info at home here, if not it will be weeks til I get there, leaving for Hawaii a week from Sunday.
