Please help me ID my diesel

I appreciate any help. I am the recent happy owner of a 1992 C36, and am trying to verify my diesel engine so I can have the appropriate spare parts and maintenance items on hand. The id plate is missing and I don't know enough to make an ID in any other way. It is a 4 cylinder Universal and I have attached pictures that I hope will help. I believe it is a Universal M35A, but I want to be sure. My surveyor did not give me a positive ID.

Happy sailing...

I alsway thought I had a M-35 on Caprice which is a 1990. What is the difference between a M-35 and a M-35A?

I have a 1991 boat (hull 1133). The engine is an M-35, per the plate on the engine. According to the information on Universal engines at the torreson.com website, the M-35 was manufactured from 1987 to 1993, and the M-35A was manufactured from 1993 to 1996. The specs look identical (horsepower, cubic inches, weight), so I don't know what the changes were. The M-35B was more of a change, putting out 35 horsepower (vs. 30 for the M-35 and M-35A). That's all I know.

Gary,
I have hull #1339, 1994 C36 with the M35A engine. Although the parts manual calls for a Johnson raw water pump, sherwood is clearly labeled on the front. The M35B spare parts kit seems to work for this engine if you have the sherwood pump. Verify the contents with the parts manual.

The parts manual (P/N 200145 dtd Oct 1990) is available on www.Westerbeke.com. The repair manual is also there. The M35B parts manual is dated 2001. There's a clue. One of the anomolies I noticed on this engine was the absense of a drain peacock on the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is the 2 1/4 diam. exchanger. I took the engine seminar at Hansen Marine in Marblehead, MA where the instructor pointed out the peacock if you wanted to change the coolant. I also found the circuit breaker on the starboard aft corner on the engine near the fuel pump. Recommend the Hansen seminar if your nearby.

I have a 1994 which has a M-35A (also a Sherwood pump).
