The guy who winterized my boat took the topping lift off, and when I was figuring out how to re-rig it, discovered it is jammed. I cannot find any documentation on what is inside the boom, or even how to get inside it. I removed screws from the cap at the end of the boom but it's not coming off easily and I don't want to break it. There is a wire with an eye coming out the clew-end and a 3/8" rope coming out the other, and I can move back and forth an inch, but it's not giving either way.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Aaron

Perhaps you have something different than what is specked out for the topping lift. On my boat it is all external. It almost sounds like you are trying to attach the topping lift to the out-haul which is internal?

Gary, you are absolutely correct - I am dealing with the outhaul. It was taken apart by the boatyard that had winterized it and I am just starting my second year with the boat, so I did not realize how that end of the boom was rigged. When I searched for "outhaul" I found this article, which looks like my problem:

I will leave this post for any newbies who follow my footsteps (in the wrong direction).
Thanks!

Aaron-
I had a 1986 C30. I think your 1988 C36 boom is of similar design. The boom outhaul lines on the C30 liked to hand up internally on the variety of self tapping screws and bolts protruding internally to the boom. After you remove the aluminum casting at the boom's end you'll be able to look inside and confirm. I removed many of the self tapping screws and filed the sharp points down and trimmed the lengths where I could. This helped somewhat. Replacing the outhaul line helped a little; frayed lines are attracted to the screw points. Also, maintaining some tension on the outhaul line prevents it from loosely swinging around internally and getting hung up on the screw shanks. Sometimes I could free up the jammed line by removing all the tension and swinging the boom back and forth. Never totally solved the issue but did improve it. Frustrating. Good luck.

Thanks Paul, it is very helpful to know it the boom cap should come off now that the screws are off. I will report back on what I find.
Thanks again!

i have a 1989 C36 and replaced all the internal rigging last year using a kit purchased from Catalina Direct.
it works great and upgraded the "purchase" power of the blocks to 10:1.
Taking the end cap off was the hardest part.
