Need to replace fresh water pump

My fresh water pump has bitten the dust. Any recommendations for replacement.  The old one is a ShurFlo 5 GPM,   Is it best to just replace with the same?

I replaced ours with the same model primarily because the mounting holes would be the same. Our air con unit is next to it and between and the ducting coming off it, there is very little room to perhaps install a different and drill new mounting holes.

Peter,
You might want to install a variable speed pump, instead of the OEM one.  The speed of the pump (and amp usage) varies with the demand.  I installed the Shurflo 4901-0211 and love it.  Your boat, your choice.

Tom - I am looking at Shurflo Aqua King II 4 GPM, as the model you suggested appears to no longer be available.  It looks like it is the newer model, and does have variable speed.  Thanks for your advice.

I too have used a variable speed fresh water pumps.  When the last one failed, I needed one fast, so I purchased a new one at West Marine.  When I installed it, I was horrified that it was a "demand type pump", that is, either on, or off.

I left it in place because of the following surprising benefit:
When on a long cruise (like to Santa Cruz Island) when water is rationed, I can tell if anyone of my crew has left a faucet open by hearing the sound of the pump going on and off every few minutes.  Typically my grown-up kids would leave the swim step shower not quite turned off.  So, instead of awakening to an empty water tank, I now can readily fix the dripping faucet/valve!

My pump gave out just before a 3 day cruise last month.  I rushed to West Marine and found that they only had a different model, the original Shureflo is no longer made.   Like Steven, I don't mind the sound because it lets me know when it is working or if I have a leak.   The only problem with the West model was that the base did not fit the screw holes for the old one.   I mounted it with a single screw for the trip and drilled the other holes the following week.

Gene,
my fresh water pump is mounted on a piece of plywood bonded to the hull.  I have just made new holes when remounting a replacement pump and used the same screws, however now in a slightly different position. I've also used just one screw for a temporary pump installation when cruising.  Doesn't seem to be critical   I always carry a spare pump.

I thought my pump had failed after all these years.  I disassembled it and found the little screen totally plugged up with bits of fiberglass and other dirt and no water flowed through it.  It now works fine to my surprise.  Just thought I would pass this on before you spend money
