The original Raytheon anemometer (part number A22012) at the top of the mast started becoming frozen intermittently. It would no longer show the direction of the wind. However a strong wind would make it turn again. Recently it stopped turning altogether. I discovered that it would only auto-tack on one side but not the other. It was time to climb the mast and bring it down for cleaning and re-lubricating. I called Raymarine(link is external), they told me that it was not repairable that its bushing was shot, a new one was needed and an exact replacement was available without the cable part number R28170. This part number does not appear in their website even if you search for it. The ones you find on their website has the wrong description. I ordered a new one from www.hodgesmarine.com(link is external) for $284.79 with free shipping. Since the boatyard fee was about $ 200.00 to use their crane to replace the unit I decided to exchange the old one with the new one. It works well after calibration.
I was curious if the old frozen one would work if lubricated. I placed a few drops of Wahl (link is external)shaving machine oil into the crevice and turned back-and-forth a few times and now it works like new. Now I have a spare anemometer!
If you face this problem - it may be worth trying to lubricate the one you have. It appears to be a better quality

I lubed the bearings previously, which worked for a short while. I finally replaced the bearings a few years ago and my old Anemometer has been running just like new.

Thanks Nile - I though so. I should have posted a topic here and ask for advice before I opened my wallet.
