We have two boom bails for the mainsheet. One in front of the traveler, and one behind (They basically form a V, with the point of the V being the traveler. I assume most MK1's are set up this way).
I need to move the aft bail further forward so it does not interfere with our solar panels. Is there any compelling reason that I would need to move the forward bail aft (i.e. to keep the angles consistent)?

The only thing you would give up is a bit of leverage on the boom, if you move them both the same amount the 'average' position would stay the same and you would not give up leverage. However, given the huge bending forces on the boom in that area, I would not add any more holes than strictly required to clear your dodger / solar / granny bar arrangement.

All of the bolts through the boom, existing and new, could stand using bushings. You over-drill the hole size to the size of the bushing, aluminum or ss tube you buy at at metal shop. The larger hole with the bushing makes the contact area on thin walled boom spread the load and avoids the bolts enlarging the holes. I did it on my existing locations.
Moving it as you describe should make no difference. Good idea.

Thanks guys, hope to have this taken care of tommorow, quasi clear day in Vancouver today, and great results from the panels so far!
