MKII Heater Exchanger Leaks (What gives)

I notice there was salt water damage around the heat exchanger gasket. I have seen this many times before when looking to purchase a C-36. Ok, time to change the gasket, yes it was dry rotted a little.

Now my question, why did they use 2 gaskets and 2 rubber washers to seal the end plate? My father told me never use 2 washer, it will leak! I am pretty sure it was the manufacturer because the washers were painted. Did they know the heat exchanger leaked so they tried to cover it up? Anyone else find this problem.

One more question, am I going to be able to stop the leak? I am replacing the gasket, washer and end plate (plan to only use one). I also plan to clean the end of the heat exchanger real good.

Thanks for helping out a lowly Seaman,
Jim

Both ends of the heat exchanger can be opened up, so maybe that's why the PO purchased two gaskets and two O-rings. But if two of each were installed on one end, that is wrong. There should be only one gasket and one O-ring at each end.

I think it was the manufacture not the PO because the gaskits were painted.

The new gaskit I purchased are smaller thanthe old 3" ones. They are the right part number but the are only 2.75" diameter.

Does this sound right?

This may not apply to your heat exchanger but, on the MKI boats there were to styles of heat exchanger. In addition the end caps to the newer style that I puchased from Westerbeke where changed from a cast cap with a formed seal to a simple brass plate/disc with a hole in it. The gasket supplied was just a flat piece of 1/8 inch neoprene material, again flat disc with a hole in it. The bolt just has a soft washer under the head.
