I know this is a forum about sailing, but many of us use a dinghy with outboard to get to our mooring. We have a 16 year old Merc 9.9 two stroke. (which I understand is nearly identical to the 15). We developed an overheat problem that turned out to be a small grommet failing at the power head where the the raw cooling water is pumped in. Evidently, this is not uncommon for the older Merc's. Not wanting to spend $2600 on a new 4 stroke or $400-$600 to pay for a repair of a $3.00 part, I spent some time pulling the power head off and removing the lower unit to replace it. Probably took 6+ hours because I had no guide/manual. If any one is interested , let me know and I'll post some info to save time.

Paul,
I am wondering based on your description what alerted you to the overheating? Also I think it would be a good idea to document what you found and what you did. A great place to place articles i.e. this is in the technical section.
