Maxwell Oil

I have a Maxwell RC-8 8 windlass on my 36 mk2.  It is the next generation of the Freedom 800 the boat came with.  Does anyone know what make and brand of oil to fill it with?

Hi Enrique,

I have a Maxwell VW1000 winch.  I added after the fact, that era boat didn't have a winch. Here's directly from their manual:

Recommended lubricants.
Gearbox oil Capacity: 70ml (2.4 fl oz) Type: SAE viscosity grade 90 -110, ( e.g. Shell Omala 320, Castrol Alpha SP 320, or other approved equivalents).

Main shaft, bearing, and clutch surfaces Marine grease, Lithium or Lithium complex based (e.g. Duckhams Keenol or Castrol LMX).

Do not use soap based grease.

I can't imagine you unit's recommendations would be different,

Yes I also saw this.  The problem is these are industrial grade lubricants not easily available in less than 55 gal. Drums.  I suspect this spec is intended for larger equipment.  The manual says SAE 90 or higher API GL-4 or lower low sulphur.  Not familiar with the nomenclature and no success at an auto parts store.  That's why I'm looking for a realistic brand name for our needs.

Hi,

SAE 90 is a gear oil.  It's the same oil you would in the lower gear case of your outboard engine.  Defender Industries and most chandleries carry it.  The oil is readily available in 1 quart containers.

I spoke with Maxwell's excellent tech support when I was changing the seals in my unit and they indicated gear oil like you'd use for an outboard is fine.
