M25 used parts

I have 1985 Catalina 36 and I’m looking for used parts for my universal M25 engine. Possible there is someone re-powering their boat and has a M25 they are salvaging. Two items I’m currently interested in:
• Exhaust manifold/ coolant reservoir
• Fuel injector pump.
I would like to correspond with anyone that has or knows were I could source these parts.

Do not limit yourself to the Universal M25, a Kuboto D950 is the same engine. This power plant is used on many large deck type mowers and tractors. Ebay is showing two running D950's for sale today. Give TractorSmart a call, you may find a new injector pump from them will not cost that much and they may have overhauled exchange. This may help with the injector pump but, the exhuast manifold and coolant tank are prepriotory to Universal marinized Kubota engines.

Keith,

I am curious why you have the need to replace the exhaust manifold/coolant reservoir? Isn't that a cast item that ought to be bulletproof?

My exhaust manifold/coolant tank developed an internal crack in one of the exhaust ports resulting in exhaust leaking into the coolant chamber, pressurizing the chamber, resulting in the coolant venting out the coolant cap. A new tank was fabricated by a local metal fabrication shop and is working ok, but I would like to replace it with the original part.

Keith- as previously posted, when you are searching for parts for your engine, the Kubota parts are much cheaper, since they aren't "MARINE" stores!

I was able to purchase a starter for my engine (M25xp) at lower cost that way.

Don't overlook industrial power and generator suppliers. I have had really good luck with EC Power in Portland, OR. They have branches in several western states. www.ecpower.com

has anyone actually dropped a Kubota D950 in to their boat, or are there subtle differences that make this difficult?

Nimue,

I overhauled my engine and used almost exclusivly D950 parts for my M25XP.
The differences that I do know about are the oil sump, the marinized version has a dip stick on the starboard side calibrated for the angle our engine sit at.
The standard Kubota dip stick can still be found our engines on the port side forward of the starter motor on the block above the oil pan, there is no handle on it it is just a nub that may be painted and rusted inplace.

The other diffence will be the exaust manifold/coolant tank, dry exhaust is used on the industrial engines. You would also need the longer exhust studs to hold it in place. A note on these, after I put my engine together I had a coolant leak at the exhaust manifold/coolant tank. When I assembled the exhaust to the engine I errored in thinking I could torque the studs using the hold down nuts on the manifold. As I learned these studs go into a wet area of the head and the studs must be torqued into the head, then put on the manifold and torque the manifold hold down nuts. If the studs are not torqued and seated in the head, the coolant will leak out around the down studs on the manifold and dribble down the side of the coolant tank. I spent much time on the internet looking for a replacement manifold before I discovered this problem. You stated you had replaced your head and made some reference to needing a manifold. You may want to retrace my footsteps and make sure you studs are torqued to the head properly.

The only other area I can think there could be a difference would be the front accessory case, I believe the industrial engine have a pad used for an accessory drive that is used for our raw water pump mount and drive, that would bear some investigation.

I did in fact look many time on Ebay and found lots of core engines out of turf moweres using the D950 block and considered purchasing one to build up.
If you look there you will probably find pictures of these engines and those pictures may answer many of your questions.

I am installing the alternator retrofit bracket and am curious as to what the torque is for the exhaust manifold studs and then the torque for the nuts?

Can't seem to find anywhere in the manuals.

Thanks

Jim,
I'd suggest giving a call to Westerbeke/Universal. I assume that's where you got the alternator bracket upgrade from, and they should know.

And the M25 is the D850 Kubota engine.

I found local Kubota dealers, reply #6, here: http://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,3133.0.html

May be easier than doing parts stuff on the internet. Those three I found were all within 35 miles of my home.

From all the posts it would seem that the early MK i 36's came with the M25/ Kubota 950 3 cyl. diesel. When did the later boats start having  the M25XP and how is that different from the earlier M25 or Kubota 950?

Chuck,
The M25XP was installed in boats starting in ABOUT 1987.  I say about because Catalina (and most other builders, I assume) used parts that were available at the time the boat was being assembled.  During that time period, they were building about 100 C36's per year, plus all the other models.  That's quite a lot of product going out the door.  The primary differences are 23 vs 21 HP, and a 3" heat exchanger vs a 2" heat exchanger.  I'm sure there were others.

As Stu mentioned

M25 =Kubota  D850

M25XP= Kubota D950

Just to avoid confusion
