I am installing the Smart Pilot X-5 on my C36 MKII and I am having a devil of a time finding the location to put my fluxgate compass. I was wondering what other owners have done. I replaced the ST-4000 which mine did not have a compass.
I did have it under te sink (Below the seating in the Galley, but I have an AC Unit there and I think it will screw it up).
Any advice out there?
Thanks,
CJ

CJ:
I have a comnav hydraulic auto pilot system made by nexus. The location I used is just aft of the mast and at the base . I mounted it to the board that holds the side of the waste tank in.
Our 1990 36 has a small door where the mast head wiring is at. I have had it there for over 7 yrs now and with out any issues. As per the instructions it needed to be midship. Hope this is of help.

Thanks Randy. I put it starboard of mast under the Cabinets and Yelevision Cubby. I do not have te same setup you do on your C36. I hope it works there, because I really do not know of any oter place to put the darn thing.

My fluxgate (ST5000) is under the base of the aft berth wet locker. It has worked well with no problems but then I also ensure that nothing metalic gets near it to cause any issues.

My fluxgate compass is on the forward face of the aft berth accessible via the storage compartment. I do have to be careful to keep only non-magnetic gear in that locker.

CJ,
You don't say whether you have the U-shaped dinette or not, but if you do, the solution I used on High Flight may be worth considering. I put the fluxgate compass in the storage compartment just portside of the mast.
Also, anyone contemplating an autopilot installation might gain some helpful insights from my autopilot article, posted elsewhere on this website. The article discusses the installation of a below-deck autopilot, but much of the installation process is common to a wheel-mounted autopilot.

I have the compass in the lowest part of the aft cabin closet. I know that it is a little outboard but with AC in front of the sink, that was the only spot free of nearby metal. I have not had any problems with this location.

Mine is mounted on the wood structor around the cabnets by the kitchen sink.
Keep the compass away from steel (engine, etc, and magnetics.)
As close to the center line of the boat is good.
