How to hoist the engine?

Universal M25XP.

I have an oil leak at the pan and just need to hoist it enough to give me room to drop the pan. I plan on using a 4x4 at the companionway and lifting with a come-along. I know where the wiring harness connects, but I've never had experience in disconnecting the tranny. Any tips would be extremely helpful.

Thanks.

JHendersen,
I would suggest not disconnecting the tranny from the motor.  Instead, simply disconnect the prop shaft from the tranny at the flange.  Only 4 bolts.  If you have the blue silicone hump hose, it might be flexible enough to move the motor slightly.  If you still have the stiff black exhaust hose between the exhaust riser and the aqualift muffler, then you will need to undo the hose at either the muffler or the riser.  Shift and throttle cables should be flexible enough left in place. Fuel hose might have enough slack in it to move the motor.  Also check the cooling water hose leading into the water pump for enough slack. Obviously you should align the motor and shaft again after you replace the oil pan.  Hope this helps.

I totally would have spaced the hump hose. Thanks for the tips!

Boy was that a pain in the ass. I got it up high enough to access the dipstick tube and the oil pan bolts. Several of the oil pan bolts were rusted beyond the use of any tool except for drilling them out and retapping the holes. A much bigger job than I was intending, so I just replaced the fill tube gasket and replaced the oil pan tube with just a simple plug, then epoxied the seam where the oil pan gasket is. Yes, I know I am just putting off the inevitable, but it is no longer leaking, and I'll be keeping a close eye on it.

I'm sure most of us have had similar experience in trying to separate old rusted parts in tight spaces.  The M25 set up in the C30  makes our C36's look like a dream to work on. On more than one late night occasion, strings of four letter words drifted across a quiet harbor from our boat. The trick is to keep the work lights dim so the neighbors can't figure out which boat is the source of all the profanity. Congratulations on completing a big messy job.
